SOLITUDES continues to be a favourite among fans of Canadian West Coast acoustic music. Because of growing demand, all tracks on the album were digitally remastered at Record Time Productions in St. John's, Newfoundland and released as a CD in 2009. This recording remains a classic, linked to the spirit of the wild wet west coast of Canada. The songs explore the theme of being alone and range from quiet folk ballads to blues to real rockers. Written at a time when the composer made his home in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, this is very much "island music," dreamy, compelling and melodic.

SOLITUDES was recorded in the Golden Age studios in 1979-80 by Simon Garber, a Vancouver producer of great renown. Even though it is a solo album, a long list of some of the West Coast's finest musicians contributed to this gorgeous collection of original songs and instrumentals performed on a wide range of instruments, with vocals accompanied by guitar, violin, viola, bass, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, flute, alto flute, recorder, xylophone and percussion. Vintage copies of this recording are currently selling online for $35 and more. We still have some in stock and are happy to offer them at a reduced price.

THE GOLDEN KEY Lazin' around in the summer sunlight Heaven only knows, that it's all I've got left But I'm feelin' all right That's the way it goes, it goes: Refrain: You know, you're not supposed to hang on (Don't hang on) And you learn you've got to let it go. I made my home on some crazy island Half a world away And I tried to buy me some peace of mind And here is what I say: (Refrain) Bridge: And the waves roll in off the open sea And I search the things that it brings to me Like a man who waits for the Golden Key To a place he's never known So I made my home on some crazy island Half a world away And I tried to buy me some piece of land And here is what I say: (Refrain) and (Bridge) So I'm lazing around in the summer sunlight Heaven only knows, that it's all I've got left But I'm feelin' all right That's the way it goes, it goes: Refrain: You know, you're not supposed to hang on (Don't hang on) And you learn you've got to let it go.

SLEEPER IN THE WAVES Seagull slide along the breeze And over the trees that stand along the shore Searching for life beneath the waves Silvery truths for him who braves the storm Raindrops falling, pouring down Shimmering curtain joining earth and sky Hiding her face behind a veil Mysteries closed to those who fail to see Wander through the lightning crack You'll never get back to what you used to be Hours of trial and times of change More than one chance to rearrange your dreams Your dreams. . . (Solo) Seagull sliding through the air You know, there's nowhere we haven't been before Breakers like shards of broken glass Now can you see yourself in waves that pass? It's just a vision of the winter storm Nothing can warm the Sleeper in the Waves See how she floats, serene and cold, Older than memories you hold So seagull slide along the breeze And over the trees that stand along the shore Searching for signs beneath the waves Down where the fishes tend the graves of time Down where the Sleeper Sleeps beneath the waves. . . Where the Sleeper Sleeps. . .beneath the waves. . .

Solitudes 02:22
SOLITUDES When you're sitting on the top of the mountain Watchin' the whole world spin by And your chances have gone past With the friends who didn't last Is your solitude a thing to make you sigh When the ones you used to know are too much trouble And their problems seem like flies around your head When nothing ever seems as real as your dreams Do you give it up to dream instead? I don't believe you'll find any solution Except to share the worry and the strife The snakes must curl their way all creation 'Til the Alabaster Mother gives you back to this life And you're sittin' on the top of the mountain Watching the whole world spin by And your chances have gone past With the ones who didn't last Is your solitude a thing to make you sigh?
5.
FOREST FLOWER When your gentle disposition Won't get you through your day And in spite of your best wishes It gets lost along the way And you find yourself too scattered To say, this isn't what I had in mind You're feelin' lost and blind. . . Chorus: Remember there's a flower in the forest Remember there's a breeze out on the sea Remember that the river flows on and on And remember there's me When you find yourself surrounded By uninvited hate And you try to save your feelings But you know that it's too late And nobody around you Appreciates the things you tried to do And they just look down on you (Chorus) and (Flute Break) When nothing you've ever been through Prepared you for the shocks And the ones you were depending on They just left you on the rocks And in such dire condition They must have known the pain they put you through They made a fool of you. . . Remember there's a flower in the forest Remember there's a breeze out on the sea Remember that the river flows on and on And remember there's me (repeat)

Opal 04:13
OPAL Opal you crowned me king of the night Erased all my fears of the dawn I held you and was held one moment in time That moment is past and you're gone Meet me tomorrow Find us some time we can share Time for looking glass truths That shimmer and fade in the air In the air. . .in the air. . . Opal I love your flashes of fire You glow with the warmth of the sun You touch me more sweetly than anyone else I still feel you after you're gone I'm a child in awe At the treasures left strewn on the sand The ocean gives more than one person can hold in his hand In his hand. . .in my hand. . . Flashes of colour reflected intone Leaving the memory of light Chips of the pebble glint blue green and gold Shining like stars in the night Diamonds are only the coal that lies old in the earth Squeezed by the hard hands of time Into more than their worth At their birth. . .at their birth. . . So, Opal you crowned me king of the night Erased all my fears of the dawn I held you and was held one moment in time That moment is past and you're gone Moment is past and you're gone Moment is past. . .and you're gone

CRYSTAL CANYONS Somewhere in the morning hours I wake from a dream Find the wilderness is all around me Where was I for all those years? Lost inside a maze Until the moment that she found me Walking down those crystal canyons Couldn't see my own reflection Fear of phantoms kept me from the forest 'Til she conquered my surprise And I could see with my own eyes That she knows best (yeah) Walking down old logging roads Singing to the rain Wonderin' how soon I'm gonna see you Falling of the autumn leaf Hardly makes a sound Is someone tapping at my window? Outside the leaves are falling Old voices gently calling When I have this work all done I'll leave here Say goodbye to crystal canyons Where lives of careful planning Lead nowhere Lead nowhere They lead nowhere. . . (Sax solo) So somewhere in the morning hours You wake from a dream Find the wilderness is still around you Where were you for all those years? Lost inside a maze Until the moment that she found you Let the wild dance begin Let the winds of morning in Leave their fear and worry to the guilty Throw away those tired things And come with me. . . Come with me

MORRO BAY, BUT NOT ALONE White is the feather that rides on the wind That marks the invisible sky And bright are the crystalline lines in the rock That teaches the Mountain to fly Riding on the wing Teach each bird to sing his songs of happiness To sing his own We fly. . . but not alone And two is the number of boats on the bay Both spreading their sails to the sun And wide is the wonder that waits on the wind First one then the other is gone Riding on the sky Like two birds so high above the sea Each sees his own They fly. . . but not alone So let us remember the splendour of stone That shines like a beacon so clear The colours of life are like lights on the bay That welcome the night without fear And why should you fear the sky? All things that live must some day fall and die Except for stone We fly. . . fly. . . fly. . . but not alone.
