SOLITUDES continues to be a favourite among fans of Canadian West Coast acoustic music. Because of growing demand, all tracks on the album were digitally remastered at Record Time Productions in St. John's, Newfoundland and released as a CD in 2009. This recording remains a classic, linked to the spirit of the wild wet west coast of Canada. The songs explore the theme of being alone and range from quiet folk ballads to blues to real rockers. Written at a time when the composer made his home in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, this is very much "island music," dreamy, compelling and melodic.

  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

SOLITUDES was recorded in the Golden Age studios in 1979-80 by Simon Garber, a Vancouver producer of great renown. Even though it is a solo album, a long list of some of the West Coast's finest musicians contributed to this gorgeous collection of original songs and instrumentals performed on a wide range of instruments, with vocals accompanied by guitar, violin, viola, bass, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, flute, alto flute, recorder, xylophone and percussion. Vintage copies of this recording are currently selling online for $35 and more. We still have some in stock and are happy to offer them at a reduced price.

about

A sad, dreamy song about lost love, packed with geological metaphors.

lyrics

OPAL

Opal you crowned me king of the night
Erased all my fears of the dawn
I held you and was held one moment in time
That moment is past and you're gone

Meet me tomorrow
Find us some time we can share
Time for looking glass truths
That shimmer and fade in the air
In the air. . .in the air. . .

Opal I love your flashes of fire
You glow with the warmth of the sun
You touch me more sweetly than anyone else
I still feel you after you're gone

I'm a child in awe
At the treasures left strewn on the sand
The ocean gives more than one person can hold in his hand
In his hand. . .in my hand. . .

Flashes of colour reflected intone
Leaving the memory of light
Chips of the pebble glint blue green and gold
Shining like stars in the night

Diamonds are only the coal that lies old in the earth
Squeezed by the hard hands of time
Into more than their worth
At their birth. . .at their birth. . .

So, Opal you crowned me king of the night
Erased all my fears of the dawn
I held you and was held one moment in time
That moment is past and you're gone
Moment is past and you're gone
Moment is past. . .and you're gone
